Fresh from representing Wales at the National Finals of Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, it was back to competition at a local level last weekend for Ammanford Town Silver Band.

There proved to be no hangover from the National Finals as the band stormed to first place in the West Wales Brass Band Association Contest held in Fishguard. Competing in the second section of a 5 tiered grading system, this win pushes the band closer to promotion with one contest left this year.

“Ammanford Band were a first section band, however since the band fell on hard times we had fallen down the rankings” explains Musical Director, Glyn Davies “ The excellent year we have had, pushes us ever closer to promotion back to where we want to be” In three years the band have been promoted from the forth section to its current position, with the first and championship sections laying ahead.

The band has come a long way in a short space of time. This success is no doubt due to a lot of effort by band members with extra rehearsals called and a lot of practise being put in at home in the run up to contests. The aim this year is to be crowned Welsh Champions for the second time in three years.

We have seen tremendous strides being taken by junior members of the band. Three of the players who were on stage on Saturday were under 13 years of age. Having started to play with our Junior Band, each has earned their place in the senior band.
