Meet the MD

Our musical director is Glyn Rhys Davies. Glyn is a local boy; a proud native of Garnswllt. Glyn started the trumpet in primary school under the guidance of Rob Owen.

On moving to Amman Valley Comprehensive, he continued his musical tuition under the stewardship of Mike Thorne, firstly on tenor horn and then trombone.

On leaving Amman Valley School, Glyn studied music at Cardiff University, where he received trombone lessons with Aneuryn James of the Welsh National Opera.

Following his successful academic phase, Glyn quickly progressed to a peripatetic role with the West Glamorgan Music Service. Following the reorganisation of music tuition within West Glam, Glyn became part of the newly formed Cerdd NPT Music; a role he is still enjoys today.

Glyn has enjoyed a successful career behind the stands as a well respected and confident trombone player. Glyn first joined Ammanford Town Silver Band as a member of the junior band before quickly being promoted into the senior band and playing in his first contest in 1998.

In 2001, he was part of the band that won the 2nd Section National Championships of Great Britain and was Solo Trombone when the band was promoted to the Championship Section.

He was also Bass Trombone for the National Youth Brass Band of Wales. After spells with Tylorstown, Mid Rhondda and Briton Ferry bands, Glyn finished playing in order to concentrate on his conducting career.

Glyn’s venture into Musical Direction saw him start at the Gwaun Cae Gurwen Band for 6 years. During that time, they were promoted from the 4th section to the 2nd section in the National grading and were Champion Band of Wales in the 2nd Section in 2007, and finished as runners up twice.

He took up the batton at his home town band when they reformed in 2011 and has remained in that position since. Under his direction, they were crowned Champion Band of Wales in the 3rd Section during 2012, and qualified in consecutive years for the National 4th and 3rd Section Finals in 2013 and 2014 respectively. In 2015, the band won the 2nd Section of the National Eisteddfod of Wales under his direction.

A series of positive results have followed over the latter part of the decade in British and Welsh contests and the band continues to develop musically and socially under his leadership.

Away from the band room, Glyn is a keen supporter of the Ospreys and currently lives in Pantyffynnon with his wife Vicky and his daughter Elinor.
